General Physical Therapy

Jamaican Physiotherapists can independently diagnose and treat all conditions falling within their scope of practice. They are regulated by the Professions Supplementary to Medicine Under The Ministry of Health. This means that you, as the patient, may seek help for conditions caused by injury, pain or disorders, respiratory and neurological conditions knowing that your therapist has been trained to competently manage your problem while at the same time trusting that she will know when it will be time to refer to a specialist physical Therapist.

Pelvic Health

Specialist Pelvic Floor, Men’s and Women’s Health Physiotherapy Service

At Physical Therapy Solutions, Specialist Pelvic Floor, Men’s and Women’s Health Physiotherapy Service is geared towards making a difference for men, women and children living with pelvic floor dysfunction. These include bladder and bowel concerns (incontinence, overactive bladder/ urge, constipation), pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, as well as musculoskeletal conditions of the pelvis such as coccyx (tail bone) pain, sacroiliac joint pains and pregnancy related problems like Diastasis recti.

Kegel’s exercise is not always the solution to pelvic floor problems. Kegel’s may even worsen some situ-ations. This is one reason it is important to receive a thorough pelvic evaluation, which may include an internal examination. As the pelvic floor has many small muscles, ligaments, nerves and connective tis-sues, only therapists with specialist training can thoroughly perform the evaluation and determine the exact source of your problem.

Our specialist pelvic floor physical therapist, on appraisal of your condition, tailors your rehabilitation specifically to meet your needs. She is skilled in performing both external and internal examinations as well as the diagnosis of the pelvic floor problem you may be experiencing. Once identified she will plot the route to your recovery.

We utilize Biofeedback in the evaluation and treatment of the pelvic floor. It can be used to facilitate pel-vic floor strengthening programs as well as the relaxation of tense or hyperactive muscles. Other tools include vaginal or rectal weights, dilators as well as manual therapy skills and bladder training schedules to facilitate your recovery.

All our Physical Therapists are trained to evaluate, identify and treat your vestibular problems and the complications you may be experiencing. Vestibular issues are complex matters involving your brain, inner ears and your eyes.

“Vestibular rehabilitation (VR) is an exercise-based program primarily designed to reduce vertigo and dizziness, diminish balance problems, reduce fall risk, reduce gaze instability, as well as address any secondary impairments that are a consequence of this inner ear disorder.

Although people who have a vestibular disorder, may have permanent deficit, rehabilitation with a specialist therapist can facilitate the reduction of symptoms and help improve functionary teaching the brain ways of compensation. This occurs because the brain learns to use other senses (vision and somatosensory-body sense) to substitute for the deficient vestibular system.”

Rehab Pilates

Rehab Pilates is a movement based approach utilized by trained health professionals for clients with specific mobility challenges. The technique aims at remedying abnormal movement patterns that may develop when there is pain and disease processes.
Pilates is a really good tool to assist and enhance your physiotherapy program when you are recovering from an injury or painful event. The technique aims at improving muscle strength deficits and postural imbalances. This is achieved by training the deep core muscles to stabilize the trunk while performing movement sequences.

Exercise sequences are choreographed to meet your individual needs as you regain control and function and is the perfect progression beyond traditional physical therapy.

Our Rehab pilates therapist is also certified as a pilates specialist for mastectomy and osteoporosis.

Shockwave Therapy

Extracorporeal Shockwave therapy is a modality which is used to treat several musculoskeletal conditions. Extracorporeal simple means ‘outside of the body’ as this is a non-invasive treatment which has been shown to be extremely safe and effective.

It is commonly used to treat achilles tendonitis, lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), plantar fasciitis and heel spurs, patellar tendonitis, shoulder rotator cuff pain, hamstring tendonitis, adductor tendonitis and myofascial trigger points.

Shockwave therapy can reduce healing times and pain in the above condiitons. It has been shown also to be very successful in chronic conditions (longer than 6 months duration) and sometimes when other treatment options have failed.

Shock Wave therapy has also had success in the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction

The machine creates high pressure acoustic (sound) waves which interact with the tissues to cause the medical effects of the therapy.

Shockwave works by causing microtrauma within the targeted tissue. This in turn promotes the inflammation process which is the first stage of healing. The bodies natural healing chemicals and components rush to the area and promote growth of new blood vessels (angiogensis) and new nerve cells (neurogensis). Normal healing resumes and the tissue begins to behave normally becoming pain free and mobile.

You may experience some mild swelling, redness of the skin for up to 24 hours after the treatment. Aside from that there are no other common side effects from Shockwave Therapy.

There are certain patient groups who cannot safely have the treatment so it is important that our physiotherapists know all relevent medical information. It is not recommended for use on pregnant women, peripheral vascular disease, tumours, over infected sites or with patients who are on steroids within the last month

IASTM

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization or Simply IASTM refers to the use of special tools which enable clinicians to efficiently locate and treat individuals diagnosed with soft tissue dysfunction. IASTM is a deep tissue procedure that is rapidly growing in popularity as it demonstrates that it can be effective yet non-invasive.

IASTM is performed with ergonomically designed instruments that detect and treat fascial restrictions, encourage rapid localization and effectively treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis, chronic inflammation, or degeneration. As in any manual therapy treatment, supplementation with exercise and additional modalities should be used in conjunction with IASTM. Joint mobilization is one such, designed to correct biomechanical deficiencies by addressing musculoskeletal strength and muscle imbalances throughout the entire kinetic chain.

Dry Needling

“An effective.. western medicine-based treatment”

Dry Needling is a cost effective and efficient technique for the treatment of myofascial (connective tissue surrounding and associated with muscle tissue) pain and dysfunction. The approach is based on Western anatomical and neurophysiological principles and should not be confused with the Traditional Chinese Medicine technique of acupuncture.

Dry Needling is an effective technique which was essentially found by mistake. Patients with taunt bands in their muscles were injected with muscle relaxants. It was later found that it was the insertion of the needle that lead to the relaxation of the taut bands rather than the relaxants themselves.

Today the needles which are used, penetrate deep into knots of muscles, to relieve tension and increase blood flow to the region.

At Physical Therapy Solutions all therapists are trained in Functional Dry Needling and it is commonly used in addition to other physiotherapy modalities in the treatment of myofascial disorders.

Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic Exercise in the solar heated, in-house, salt water pool at Physical Therapy Solutions gives you the opportunity to do movements you could not do out of water. That is because gravity is less in water due to the buoyancy of your body. The water also gives some resistance similar to weights.
You are never left alone in the pool as you rebuild your strength without the physical stress of full weight bearing.
